Video Bioinformatics NSF IGERT Fellow Benjamin Guan's Team Wins HISB 2012 Best Paper Award for Work with Stem Cells

Benjamin Guan, a PhD candidate in the School of Engineering, received the award for the best platform presentation at the IEEE HISB annual meetings in San Diego this year. Ben has been working on developing software tools to classify different types of stem cells in video data. Ben works with Dr. Bir Bhanu, the Director of the IGERT program in video bioinformatics. Also on the paper were Dr. Sabrina Lin and Dr. Prue Talbot from the Department of Cell Biology & Neuroscience and the UCR Stem Cell Center.

Healthcare Informatics Imaging and Systems Biology (HISB) is an IEEE international conference that focuses on computation and analysis on large collections of data for Healthcare and Biomedical sciences. The IEEE HISB conference was held along with iDASH workshops on September 27th, 2012 at UC San Diego. It is a top quality scientific meeting that blends the best of science and social opportunities in a select environment of open discussion and scientific debate. The conference emphasizes cross-disciplinary knowledge sharing, so thematic tracks are not parallel, offering all the opportunity to learn topics in which they do not specialize, but to which they get exposure to help contextualize research and inspire new interdisciplinary ideas.

Congratulations to Ben and his team (pictured below).
